Brendan Iribe Center
College Park, MD
The Brendan Iribe Center, on the campus of the University of Maryland, is a 215,600 square-foot, six-story instructional and research facility with complex, specialized labs that support augmented reality and artificial intelligence, robotics, programming and is also the home of the 300-person Antonov Auditorium.
The building encompasses an image of technological advancement while preserving it’s neo-Georgian heritage on campus with its unique use of brick and bonds patterns.
On the interior wall of the Computer Science and Engineer Center, the brick is conducted in such a divine way that it appears as if it’s moving. The pattern signifies movement and information flow, leading it to achieve forward-thinking and technological innovation.
The material selection of two popular Glen-Gery molded brick colors, Georgian and 53-DD, worked perfectly for the Computer Science and Engineering building to blend in a while standing out on campus. The Brendan Iribe Centers is an excellent exhibit of preserving tradition and history while finding creative ways to be innovative and popular to spectators.

Aspen White WirecutThe Cooper is a 92-unit multifamily residential project located in Downtown Wilmington on the lower side of Market Street and extends through to King Street. This masonry building was previously known as the Cooper Furniture Store.
DIGSAU salvaged the historic cast-iron façade of the original furniture store (built in 1874) and incorporated it within their design using Aspen White brick in two textures from Glen-Gery. The cast-iron section serves as the gateway into the building’s courtyard.
Drawing on the eclectic variety of the neighboring brick and limestone buildings, the standout features of the Cooper are the integrated range of brick bond patterns and textures, as well as the large arched windows on the ground level.
The five-story Cooper Apartments building is the perfect balance of style and comfort with impressive amenities and walkable convenience.

Brickworks Supply, formerly Capital Brick & TileTen at Clarendon is a five-story, 143-unit luxury apartment community offering one, two, three, and four-bedroom units in the highly-coveted Arlington County neighborhood. The design of the project aimed to create a seamless transition, both in scale and use, between the small-scale residential neighborhood to the south and the dense, high-rise neighborhood to the north.
Stretching longer than a football field, the main façade of Ten at Clarendon incorporates vertical glass bays and metal fins to break down the apparent length of the overall building on this unique site. Glen-Gery brick was selected to wrap the building’s lower two floors. Smoky Quartz Ironspot, a cream brick with dark ironspots, provides the scale and durable clay-based material as the building ‘grows from the earth.’ The brick colors of Benson (deep brown) and Black Pearl (black) used as banding, wrap the base of the building, while four-story sections of a blend of Rome Grey and Golden Dawn (both cream tone brick) bays the façade composition and relates directly to the brick of the adjacent urban context.
Glen-Gery brick is a sustainable, durable, and low-maintenance material, making it perfect for inclusion in this LEED for Homes Platinum-rated building. The base condition is consistently durable by bringing Glen-Gery brick down to the grade around the entire structure: a stray snow shovel or car door won’t cause damage. At the commercial level specifications, the thin brick veneer wall allowed them to easily meet the building code mandated with insulating the wall cavities without complicating the weather sealing of the exterior wall system.

White Plains VelourNorth+Vine was inspired by its neighborhood, Old Town, which is a hub for creative professionals and renowned for the performing arts. The eye-catching details, modern layouts and stylish features of the hotel-style approach to apartment living provides residents with a wide selection of studio, one, two- and three-bedroom pet friendly options.
In designing North+Vine, FitzGerald’s designers took all the arts into consideration when thinking of the details of the spaces in the building. The corridors bring in the literary arts and have a custom mural showcasing book bindings of some of the most famous authors. The public spaces are a mix of the theater and musical arts including caged light fixtures to echo the backstage of a theater building, wallcoverings that look like stacked amps and tie-dye inspired carpet tiles to bring in a nod to the heyday of the neighborhood.
The exterior is clad with more than 250,000 Norman size brick. Norman size units are approximately one and a half bricks long -- nearly 12” compared to a typical Modular size brick that is nearly 8” long. Brick is an abundant part of the fabric of the city of Chicago. It has a certain human scale quality that is important and is traditional, but the colors and textures of the Silverstone Velour and White Plains brick allowed FitzGerald to do something more clean and modern in terms of the look of the brick.
The Norman size brick relates to the length of the building, and relates to the long façade that is along the North Avenue. The building is really part of the community and part of the fabric of the neighborhood.

Columbia Roman MaximusThe 881 Lexington Avenue building is located in Stuyvesant Heights, Brooklyn. The building was designed with a modern facade featuring Glen-Gery’s Roman Maximus size brick in the color “Columbia”, expansive windows and a metal enclosure panel system.
A stand out feature of the 881 Lexington Ave building is the Roman Maximus size brick and the Sicilian bond pattern (also known as Random Bond) as it was laid. Roman Maximus brick was chosen for its horizontality proportions and varied length (4”, 6”, 8”, 16”, 18” and 20”) that break up a typical brick pattern. The vertical pattern adds to the modern feel.
This multi-use building consists of commercial spaces on the first floor and residential spaces from floors two through six. The building has a height of 70 feet above grade and was designed with a concrete frame. The building includes many amenities including several exercise facilities, gated access, a rooftop terrace and high end appliances in each unit.

ShenandoahElmhurst Memorial Hospital’s massive 866,000-square-foot medical building sits on a 50-acre campus, located in Illinois. The medical facility has been recognized as one of the most beautiful hospitals in the United States for five consecutive years and has won numerous awards. The buildings on campus date back to 1920’s, using traditional red molded brick. When the time came for expansion over the years, the task of matching new brick to the original building was no challenge for the Illinois Brick Company team, now a part of Brickworks. Brick manufacturer, Glen-Gery, is known for its renowned molded brick manufacturing which provides a vintage appearance and hand craftsmanship and was a perfect style to match the historic building.
The collaboration between the architect, distributor and mason throughout all phases of the design and build of this project were seamless. As a result, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital has transformed its campus into a state-of-the-art facility while preserving historical integrity and charm with beautiful red brick, a Glen-Gery Shenandoah molded. More than one and a half million brick were used on this campus to create an inviting, home-like appeal to incoming patients. The atmosphere of the entire campus cultivates healing of the mind, body and spirit.
There are several key unique features of this building, including the unmistakable red molded brick mixed with precast concrete and the beautiful, full-length windows, both of which showcase the building beyond the typical medical facility design.
