Adaptive Reuse
Join Architectural Record for three CE sessions followed by a cocktail reception. Earn credits for each session attended. Programming is still being finalized but this event will be submitted for 2.25 AIA LU.
While it’s often the case that a late 19th- or early 20th-century industrial building will have outlived its original use by now, it’s also the case that many of these structures—with their sturdy construction and vast interiors—have been brilliantly adapted for radically different purposes. This Record on the Road event in New York on March 27 will showcase several such examples in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Rick Cook, FAIA, founding partner of COOKFOX Architects, will present his firm’s work on the recently unveiled transformation of St. John’s Terminal, the former terminus of what’s now known as the High Line, as well as its ongoing work at Terminal Warehouse, into high-performance biophilic workplaces. Philip Schmerbeck, U.S. studio director for Herzog & de Meuron, will discuss the conversion of a former turbine hall for a power station into Powerhouse Arts, a not-for-profit manufacturing facility for art production along Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal.
