Brick Product &Technical Specifications

This presentation will elaborate upon the information typically presented in a brick product technical data sheet, using typical Glen-Gery technical data sheets as examples. An overview of frequently encountered American brick standards will be provided. This will be followed by in-depth descriptions of the individual tests reported on in the data sheet, as well as the interpretation and significance of the reported values and their respective limits. You will earn 1 LU/HSW credit for attending. 

This presentation should teach attendees-

  • Analyze a typical brick technical data sheet to find physical properties related to brick durability.
  • Apply appropriate ASTM brick standards and based on intended use and building application.
  • Compare the requirements of “Grade”, “Class”, and “Type” applications within common brick standards.
  • Explore how tests used to determine commonly reported brick properties are performed.
  • Describe the significance of the reported values and how they relate to product performance.

The AIANY Women in Architecture Recognition Award honors one recently licensed woman architect who demonstrates strong leadership skills and a commitment to the growth and advancement of our profession. The selected recipient receives a $1,000 stipend towards travel and miscellaneous expenses at the AIA Conference on Architecture, which will be held in Boston on June 4–7, 2025. The winner will be announced at this annual holiday party which provides an opportunity to hear from the recently licensed women and network with the Women in Architecture committee and colleagues from the design community.

Introduction to Think Brick Systems

One of the new developments in construction is the increased use of thin veneer systems. Clay brick is a perfect fit for these types of installations. We will discuss basic wall detailing and construction. There are multiple combinations of materials to use in a thin brick wall. We will minimize the confusion and give you a clear and concise way to achieve a sound thin brick wall. Topics to be covered include :

Manufacturing

We will look at the way in which thin brick are made and how this affects their use. Certain processes are better suited for different types of installations.

Installation

As mentioned previously, thin brick can be installed in a variety of ways. We will examine all options and give the positives and negatives with each.

Cost and Estimation

There is some misinformation on the actual cost of a thin brick wall. We will look at the special concerns related to thin brick and show you an accurate comparison with other walls to allow you and your owner to make an informed decision.

Life Cycle / Durability

There has been some concern with regards to the life cycle of these thin veneer walls. We will also discuss real world expectations for these systems.

Identify the environmental benefits of thin clay brick.

Discuss potential cost saving related to the use of thin brick when compared to face brick.

Compare and contrast physical properties of thin brick used in adhered veneer assemblies with face brick in anchored veneer applications

Discuss the various thin brick veneer wall systems and application available including Precast, Tilt-Up, and Adhered Applications and their performance relating to use as an exterior wall system including water penetration resistance and movement.
