Adding Interest with Brick Shapes

One important reason for brick's popularity is its ability to adapt to design criteria. It can be shaped and used in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary detailing: Such as arches to sills, copings, columns and treads. This program focuses on the use of shapes, not only to increase the aesthetic quality of brickwork, but also toward accomplishing better detailing and better performing brickwork. Many applications involve units that are not normally considered to be brick shapes. Increased water penetration resistance, reducing the size of expansion joints, and the proper design of acute angle corners, can all be realized through the use of shapes.

Discussion will focus on increased performance of brickwork through the use of specially designed brick, i.e. arch design and versatility, sloped sills and caps, shelf angle brick, and even brick sculpture. Included will be discussion on how to reduce the cost of shapes through individual brick design and considerations of color, size, and bond patterns.

We often forget that many historical details, that included special shapes, were used for more than just aesthetic reasons.

How to Build the Impossible:

a case study on the Dr. Chau Chak Wing Building at UTS Sydney designed by Frank Gehry

This presentation takes an in-depth look at the masonry component of the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building façade. Shaped like a “crumpled up paper bag”, Frank Gehry’s complex design required the development of 5 unique brick shapes produced by the Brickworks Bowral Bricks facility in Australia. A bespoke wall tie was also developed to secure the bricks to the undulating substrate. This iconic building has been highly influential shaping the resurgence of contemporary brick architecture throughout Australia.

Learning outcomes:

• Discover how the façade at UTS was designed and constructed
• Determine how design limitations were overcome with the development of unique bricks
• Identify the design details for the bespoke brick restraint system used
• Describe the design development, engineering, fabrication of the UTS façade

Australia is an old continent with a new culture. In 250 years of white settlement, capital cities have evolved from colonial backwaters to global metropolises. Australia has absorbed influences from its indigenous inhabitants, European forefathers and Asian neighbours. It’s a unique culture connected to many disparate influences. Over 35 years of practice, Ed Lippmann’s work, grounded in twentieth century modernism has sought a continuity of a relevant and appropriate architecture of its time and place. The talk will describe his influences, the ideas behind much of his early work and later larger scale urban projects.

About the Speaker

Ed Lipp­mann grad­u­at­ed with hon­ours from UNSW fol­low­ing a year in Bauhaus Mas­ter Mar­cel Breuer’s office in New York. A the­sis on the sig­nif­i­cance of tech­nol­o­gy in con­tem­po­rary Archi­tec­ture informed his approach to design.

The prac­tice was estab­lished in 1985 and dur­ing the ensu­ing decades, a range of res­i­den­tial, com­mer­cial, pub­lic and Indus­tri­al projects were realised. In recent years many of these projects have inter­faced with the pub­lic realm. Lippmann’s con­cern for urban­i­ty, the shape of cities and envi­ron­men­tal sus­tain­abil­i­ty have giv­en rise to books, pub­li­ca­tions and a radio series which he hosts in Sydney.

Brick Product Technical Specifications

This presentation will elaborate upon the information typically presented in a brick product technical data sheet, using typical Glen-Gery technical data sheets as examples. An overview of frequently encountered American brick standards will be provided. This will be followed by in-depth descriptions of the individual tests reported on in the data sheet, as well as the interpretation and significance of the reported values and their respective limits.

This presentation should teach attendees-

• Analyze a typical brick technical data sheet to find physical properties related to brick durability.
• Apply appropriate ASTM brick standards and based on intended use and building application.
• Compare the requirements of “Grade”, “Class”, and “Type” applications within common brick standards.
• Explore how tests used to determine commonly reported brick properties are performed.
• Describe the significance of the reported values and how they relate to product performance.
