Basics of Brickwork Detailing

Water penetration is responsible for many of the problems encountered in masonry walls today. The successful performance of a masonry wall depends on limiting the amount of water penetration and controlling any water that does enter the wall system. Water penetration resistance and control in brick veneer is the focus of this presentation. The concept behind the ‘brick veneer drainage wall’ is discussed in detail, as well as, the proper materials to specify in order to maximize a wall's water penetration resistance. The various elements and materials which make up a building are in a constant state of motion. All building materials expand and contract due to changes in temperature; some materials move with changes in moisture content. Each building material also changes dimensions due to stress and some materials tend to flow when subjected to sustained loads. These major causes of movement: thermal, moisture, deflection and creep, along with the proper way to control these movements are the focus of this presentation.

Other topics included in this presentation are --

  • Workmanship: What to expect from the mason.
  • Airspaces: Why is the airspace so important and what are the minimum requirements for proper performance.
  • Colorless Coatings: When should they be used? Are they always effective?
  • Flashing and Weepholes: Which types are most effective?
  • Expansion Joints, Control Joints, Building Expansion Joints: Is there really a difference, or is it just semantics.
  • Joint Spacing: Is there an appropriate ‘Rule of Thumb’ - or can such a rule lead to cracking?
  • Compressible Fill: Where should it be used and why.
  • Shelf Angle Details: What must occur at shelf angles to allow for the expected movements?

Demystifying Masonry Anchors: A Guide to Getting it Right Every Time

This course provides simple, but detailed guidance for choosing masonry anchors that provide the best performance and compatibility with other wall assembly components. overview Building code requirements that determine the anchor types for various masonry wall applications are identified. Characteristics of different anchor types are compared and recommendations are given for attachment to wood stud, steel stud, CMU and concrete backings, based on consideration of material movements and air space dimensions, as well as they types of membranes and continuous insulation.

Learning Objectives

1. Review appropriate anchor types and methods for anchoring masonry to wood and steel studs.

2. Identify proper anchors for masonry with continuous insulation.

3. Discuss options for anchoring full bed depth stone veneer to stud and CMU backings.

4. Compare anchor designs and options for attachment of masonry veneer to CMU and concrete construction.

Historic Masonry Repair & Restoration

Get an overview of historic masonry wall assemblies and their evolution from mass, to transitional, to cladding systems. This session explores the differences between these systems and how they function. Learn the rationale and methodology for condition assessment and gain insight into common types of deterioration and material characteristics. Understanding the material properties, the type of construction, and its vulnerabilities helps in developing appropriate repair and restoration solutions. Prioritizing repairs, such as protecting horizontal surfaces, integrating new flashings, and repairing steel elements can help to solve the root cause of damage or water infiltration. General appropriate masonry repair and replacement options are discussed for several types of masonry such as brick, terra cotta, stone, cast stone, and their associated mortar. Finally, see how craftworkers that are trained and educated in masonry restoration are assets to project teams and play a significant role in successful historic masonry projects.

Alloyius Mcilwaine

This self-taught American artist was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has been passionate about the arts since his childhood. Thus, Alloyius McIlwaine has been painting and drawing on a daily basis since he was three years old, following his own desires and working without any preconceived ideas. As he puts it so well, "the idea of appealing to an emotional response, through the use of color, shapes, textures and composition, has always fascinated [him]".

As a child, he quickly developed a taste for these elements through working with comics, devoting himself diligently and faithfully to reproducing the drawings down to the very last detail. A few years later, fuelled by his own personal discoveries, the young artist set out to experiment with different media and styles in order to finally develop his own pictorial writing.

His artistic language lies between figuration and abstraction, incorporating elements from both urban and pop art and it is resolutely free and contemporary. Whether he is working on canvas or on walls, Alloyius spontaneously and naturally takes pleasure in coating surfaces with large colored planes to give rise to pictorial, and extremely dynamic, creations. He is also a muralist and has painted these murals across the globe - from Japan to France, Costa Rica to Morocco - and has also covered a large number of public and private facades all around his native country with his unique signature. This artist is as enthusiastic as he is passionate, and likes to disseminate his works in order to cover cities with bright and joyful splashes of color.

Brickworks Philadelphia Design Studio Speaker Event featuring Cecil Baker

Please join us at Brickworks North America's very first Design Studio, a luxury space for intrinsically bold products, for an insightful lecture and Q&A with Philadelphia's very own Cecil Baker.

Philadelphia has had a long love affair with brick. With clients, with users, with affected communities, there is an immediate welcoming to the use of brick. Like a collective sigh of relief! Brick is symbolic of our heritage and is also unmatched in longevity: it in fact often even looks better with age. It has the patina of romance, gracefully embraces the passage of time and the corrosions of nature. So our issue today is how to let the brick vault us into new design opportunities? How do we take it from this place of soulful comfort into places and configurations that are reflective of change, of new paradigms.
