Exploring the Many Advantages of Big Brick

Clay brick provides you with many advantages. Hundreds of different colors, shapes and textures are just a few examples. We can also manufacture brick in many different sizes. Employing larger brick on your project can reduce the installed cost of masonry drastically and enhance its sustainability, energy efficiency, as well as reduce maintenance cost.

Topics to be covered include:

Manufacturing

We will look at the way in which brick are made and how this affects their use with special emphasis given to larger units. At this point we will also talk about manufacturer’s efforts to be environmentally friendly.

Cost and Estimation

We will explore a typical wall and compare the final costs of modular brick to the larger sizes.

Mason’s Production

The main advantage gained from using larger masonry units is an increased in the wall area laid each day. We will compare production with a large unit versus a standard modular unit.

Coursing and Patterns

Larger brick may have different coursing requirements. We will look at these and give you all the tools you will need to make your building something to be proud of.

This presentation will cover a detailed explanation of the challenges and solutions facing through-wall flashings and transition membranes, provide a thorough description of the characteristics of several types of membranes, emphasize the importance of compatibility, and explain proper installation techniques.

Brick Product &Technical Specifications

This presentation will elaborate upon the information typically presented in a brick product technical data sheet, using typical Glen-Gery technical data sheets as examples. An overview of frequently encountered American brick standards will be provided. This will be followed by in-depth descriptions of the individual tests reported on in the data sheet, as well as the interpretation and significance of the reported values and their respective limits. You will earn 1 LU/HSW credit for attending. 

This presentation should teach attendees-

• Analyze a typical brick technical data sheet to find physical properties related to brick durability.
• Apply appropriate ASTM brick standards and based on intended use and building application.
• Compare the requirements of “Grade”, “Class”, and “Type” applications within common brick standards.
• Explore how tests used to determine commonly reported brick properties are performed.
• Describe the significance of the reported values and how they relate to product performance.

This course focuses on identification, anticipation and control of the movements that affect masonry facades and the structures that support them. The effects of temperature, moisture and other forces on brick and other building materials are discussed as well as recommended methods for detailing, locating, spacing and installation of vertical and horizontal movement joints.

This presentation should teach attendees-

• Compare how different masonry materials respond to changes in their environment.
• Discuss strategies and best practices for movement joint location, detailing and installation.
• Identify conditions that cause movement in structures.
• Anticipate where movement joints must be incorporated into brick construction.

Protective Treatments for Masonry and Concrete

As some of the earliest building materials, masonry and concrete have been used for their durability and strength. However, masonry architecture, both historical and contemporary, has been left vulnerable to water—the single most damaging element to masonry in our environment. This course identifies common water-related problems for masonry and concrete, describes protective treatments that increase masonry durability, and explains the process for safely selecting and applying a protective treatment.
