Thin Brick for Precast Applications - Design Considerations

Brick and concrete are two of the oldest building materials known to man, with each being used since ancient times to create structures that are both magnificent and enduring. Brick facing has become a favorite option among precast applications because of the almost unlimited variety of colors, textures and finishes that can be achieved. This program will review system benefits and design considerations, as well as specific techniques used to manufacture thin brick and precast for these special applications that will aid the designer in realizing the highest performance and aesthetics expectations.

This program will review code and standard requirements relating to thin brick specification for embedding into precast panels. Information related to life cycle and environmental impacts, as well as management of water penetration is also presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review physical property and tolerance requirements of ASTM C 1088 for thin brick units.
  • Compare recommendations within PCI specifications for thin brick with ASTM C 1088 requirements.
  • Identify characteristics of thin brick faced precast that result in enhanced aesthetics, resilience, quality and economy.
  • Apply design and specification best practices that promote design flexibility and optimal appearance.

About the book:

Materiality is a publication that explores the use of bricks in contemporary architecture. Materiality is intended to provoke discussion and interest among architects and designers, professionals and students, and the general reader.

This year’s edition, Materiality: Brick in contemporary university architecture, highlights how architects and designers are using brick in campus and community architectural projects across the United States. As with previous volumes, this latest publication offers case studies, illustrated technical essays, and rich photographs and drawings that provide a high-level view of how the architect and designer imagined and executed their project. All attendees will leave with a copy of the book.

About the event:

The event will take place in our New York Design Studio on Thursday, April 18 at 5:30pm. The event will include a discussion, “Shapes to the X Degree,” featuring several architects from across the United States. The speakers, whose firms and projects are featured in Materiality, will discuss how unique architectural shapes and details can be achieved through the use of masonry. There will be an opportunity for Q&A after the discussion.

About the architectural collaboration:

The launch celebration will also mark the introduction of Glen-Gery’s inaugural architect collaboration program. Event attendees, including architects, designers and students, can enter for a chance to receive a one-of-a-kind collaboration opportunity with Glen-Gery as an honorary member of their R&D Team. The chosen recipients of the program will have the chance to visit the company’s Mid-Atlantic factory in Pennsylvania where they will work with Glen-Gery to create a unique brick shape of their own design. This customized brick can then serve as the centerpiece for conceptual building project renderings or sketches.

Request a copy of the book here: https://www.glengery.com/materiality

All attendees will be offered a copy of the book as well.
