PEA Welcome Event!

The Welcome Event has always been our way to kick off the year and share who we are and what we do to new and returning members. It is also a chance for emerging professionals to connect with our committee and other people in the AEC industry. Whether you were involved with our committee before or are hearing about us for the first time this event is for you! A night of networking and light refreshments, the Welcome Event is a fantastic way to get involved in the Design community of Philadelphia. The term “emerging professionals” ranges from a new graduate to someone who has been licensed for 10 years so we hope you'll join us on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00pm in person at Brickworks Design Studio.

Event Summary:  Product and Technical Showcase

Join us for an exclusive product showcase featuring the new Summit Series brick from our recently reopened Rocky Ridge plant. This event is a fantastic opportunity to see the latest innovations in brickwork and connect with industry professionals. Each attended seminar is 1 AIA LU Credit.

Event Details:

  • Date: June 26th 2024
  • Time: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Location: Brickworks Design Studio - 445 5th Avenue

Schedule:

Seminars:

  •  1:00 PM: Enhancing Thin Masonry Veneer: Metal Support - Leroy Danforth Earn 1 AIA LU Credit
    • This program examines the design and performance characteristics of metal backing systems that mechanically support thin masonry veneers. Comparisons between various systems and traditionally laid face brick masonry are made and critical design and installation factors are reviewed. Performance tests that establish code compliance of proprietary thin veneer support systems are identified. Strategies for water penetration, structural performance, thermal efficiency and NFPA 285 approval are presented.
    • Learning Objectives
      • 1. Review water management strategies for mechanically supported thin masonry veneer systems
      • 2. Analyze veneer support methods for mechanically supported thin masonry veneer systems
      • 3. Identify requirements for supporting thin masonry veneer over continuous insulation
      • 4. Review how thin masonry veneer systems comply with building codes
  • 1:30 PM: Basics of Brickwork Detailing - JP Lima Earn 1 AIA LU Credit
    • Water penetration and insufficient accommodation for movement are responsible for many of the problems encountered in masonry walls today. Water penetration resistance and movement control in brick veneer is the focus of this course. Brick veneer drainage wall principles are discussed in detail, as well as specification of materials for maximum water penetration resistance. All building materials expand and contract due to changes in temperature; some materials move with changes in moisture content. Primary causes of movement, including temperature, moisture, deflection and creep, as well as strategies for avoiding resulting masonry distress, such as construction, size, and spacing of vertical and horizontal movement joints are reviewed.
    • Learning Objectives
      • 1. Design and select materials for optimum water penetration resistance.

      • 2. Discuss efflorescence, cleaning and the use of clear coatings on masonry walls.

      • 3. Review location, spacing and detailing recommendations for movement joints

      • 4. Identify installation best practices that promote quality brickwork

  • 3:00 PM: Adding Interest with Brick Shapes - Kevin Lindstrom Earn 1 AIA LU Credit
    •  This program focuses on the use of shapes, not only to increase the aesthetic quality of brickwork, but also toward accomplishing better detailing and better performing brickwork. Increased water penetration resistance, reducing the size of expansion joints, and the proper design of acute angle corners, can all be realized using shapes. Included is a discussion on how to reduce the cost of shapes through individual brick design and considerations of color, size, and bond patterns. Other topics included in the course are manufacturing, functions of specific shapes and brick sculpture.
      • Learning Objectives
      • 1. Select clay brick shapes to limit water penetration.

      • 2. Summarize information needed to specify and detail brick shapes.

      • 3. Review techniques for manufacturing brick shapes.

      • 4. Demonstrate how the attractiveness of the building is increased by using brick shapes.

  • Cocktail/Networking:
  • Begins at 4:30 PM

Why Attend?

  • Exclusive Insights: Learn from industry experts about the latest trends and techniques in brickwork.
  • Networking: Connect with professionals in the field during our cocktail hour.

Thin Brick for Precast Applications - Design Considerations

Brick and concrete are two of the oldest building materials known to man, with each being used since ancient times to create structures that are both magnificent and enduring. Brick facing has become a favorite option among precast applications because of the almost unlimited variety of colors, textures and finishes that can be achieved. This program will review system benefits and design considerations, as well as specific techniques used to manufacture thin brick and precast for these special applications that will aid the designer in realizing the highest performance and aesthetics expectations.

This program will review code and standard requirements relating to thin brick specification for embedding into precast panels. Information related to life cycle and environmental impacts, as well as management of water penetration is also presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review physical property and tolerance requirements of ASTM C 1088 for thin brick units.
  • Compare recommendations within PCI specifications for thin brick with ASTM C 1088 requirements.
  • Identify characteristics of thin brick faced precast that result in enhanced aesthetics, resilience, quality and economy.
  • Apply design and specification best practices that promote design flexibility and optimal appearance.
